HOMEGROWN singer-actress Kit Chan is not married, and motherhood is still out of the question for her. But in her feature film acting debut in Lover’s Discourse, she had both an unfaithful husband and an 18-year-old son, played by veteran entertainer Eric Tsang and Cantopop newbie Carlos Chan respectively.

And not only that, she was also the object of fantasy of her son’s best friend, played by up-and-coming Hong Kong singer-actor William Chan, who is also widely known as Charlene Choi’s new boyfriend following her high-profile divorce from singer-actor Ronald Cheng.

But William’s love for Kit was unrequited in the film, and in reality Kit said she will also not accept an 18-year-old admirer, because it feels legally wrong to date anyone below 21.

‘But if I am 48, and he is 28, then it is a different ball game,’ said Kit, who added that it is not the age gap that matters most. What’s more important is that a couple is on the same page.

Kit is clearly on the same page with her boyfriend of 10 years, just that she is not prepared for marriage yet.

‘My parents are not saying anything,’ so Kit is happy to busy herself with more work. She is slated to release her first studio album in six years next week, and will also perform two sold-out concerts with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra during the Huayi Festival.

While Kit is no greenhorn in the musical theatre scene, this is really the 38-year-old’s first time tackling a major and complex role. Her only other big-screen appearance was in a 1999 local film Eating Air, where she had a cameo role. Kit Chan believes Olivia Ong has potential

The local songbird leads 38 local singers in remake of ‘Home’

This is home truly, where I know I must be.

Those who adore ‘Home’, one of the National Day songs, will definitely look forward to its remake next year.

Most Singaporeans would be familiar with ‘Home’, a prominent tune previously sung by veteran singer Kit Chan. Come Total Defence Day, which falls on Feb 15, the song will have a new version. This remake features the vocals of 39 local singers, making it the first local song with the largest number of collaborators.

These 39 singers span across different generations, from 1960s to 2000s. Apart from Kit, the original singer of the song, other performers included local singers Stefanie Sun, JJ Lin, Tanya Chua, Olivia Ong, Maggie Teng, Rahimah Rahim, as well as music producers Wu Jia Ming and Lee Wei Song. Kit is also the executive producer for the music video.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean showed his support and encouragement yesterday, when he visited the set of the music video at the SAFTI Military Institute, where more than 10 singers were present.

In an interview with xinmsn, Kit revealed that the production took half-a-year of conceptualisation and preparation. Not only did the singer rope in singers whom she was friends with, Kit also turned up at each recording session.

Kit hopes that different generations of Singaporeans will be able to identify with this new version of ‘Home’ and for the country to stand united even after 2011.

When asked about her thoughts on the singers of today, Kit said: “Things get better with time. Their (new singers) debuts are now more eye-catching, unlike the past. We weren’t that fashionable then. They also have very good production crew now.”

Amongst these new singers, Kit complimented Olivia Ong and shared her take on this budding artiste.

“Olivia has good prerequisites; her vocals and her appearance are likeable. Her challenge now is to accumulate experience within these five years. It is important to do so, in order to mature and express herself better,” she advised.

It is difficult to be a singer nowadays. There are many talented people all around and singing competitions provided a springboard for star-wannabes. There are few who can sustain their popularity. It is definitely not an easy task for Singaporean singers to break out of the local music scene.

When asked if she thought the market was saturated at the moment, Kit said that everywhere in the world was saturation because there were a number of things which distract people away from music. Therefore, an artiste must always remain prominent. However, the local songbird emphasised that being prominent did not mean that one had to act weirdly as sincerity is also a form of prominence.

“There had been many cycles since I joined the entertainment industry 17 years ago. It’s good enough if people remember 10 out of the 100 albums you released. This is a cycle. This is reality,” said Kit, who did not think that it was difficult for local newbies to make a breakthrough.

The singer added that with enough talent, the public will be able to remember the artiste for at least 10 years.

“I think we are doing well. Don’t be too hard (on the singers),” Kit said.

The local songbird let on that she would be releasing her new album in January after a six-year hiatus.

Also at the scene yesterday was veteran singer Maggie Teng. She expressed her happiness at being part of the production because it allowed her to see friends she “have not met in a long time”. The veteran also said there was chemistry between the various singers.

Maggie added that new singers these days were remarkable because they needed to be talented in different areas. She said singers of her time only had to worry about their vocal, expression, image and stage presence while the singers now have to also dance and compose their own songs.

Local popular songstress Joi Chua, who has been maintaining a low profile after her marriage, was also present at the event. The singer expressed that she is currently busy with personal matters and revealed that she will be starting a business next year.

When pressed for details, Joi refused to divulge more, saying there would be news soon.

TICKETS to big shows at the Huayi Festival are selling well, with several acts adding extra gigs to cater for the good reception.

Now in its ninth instalment, the annual 10-day Chinese festival of the arts, organised by the Esplanade, will open on Feb 4.

One of the acts in hot demand is home-grown songstress Kit Chan.

Chan, 38, a veteran singer who broke out in 1993, had been on a six-year music hiatus since 2004. But she has not lost her appeal, if ticket sales are anything to go by.

Chan had initially planned for just one show on Feb 12.

But 70 per cent of tickets were snapped up in just two weeks, leading to another gig being added on Feb 13.

The new date was announced two weeks after tickets to her Feb 12 gig went on sale on Nov 11.

While she made her musical comeback in Toy Factory Productions’ December Rains in August, this will be Chan’s first large-scale solo concert in six years.

She will be performing her gigs at the Esplanade Concert Hall, accompanied by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.

“It’s her first show in many years. I definitely want to go and support her,” said Ms Selene Quek, 30, who bought tickets to watch Chan perform.

The festival is also devoted to promoting local talents such as Kit Chan, said Ms Yee, and hopes the diversity and artistry of the festival’s performers will serve as an inspiration to the audience.
